Withania Somnifera(Ashwagandha) Cultivation:


One of the most profitable crops is Ashwagandha i.e Withania somnifera. Its cultivation has following advantages:
1.The product has a very high international demand.
2.It requires very little amount of water.
3.It is not foraged by cattle, and any type of pest infestation is unknown in Withania somnifera.
4.The roots,leaves, and the seeds all are useful and have medicinal properties.
5.The crop does not require much attention by way of regular irrigation.

This is a strong aphrodisiac and is a widely utilized as a energy medicine. Every part of the plant gives the farmer a profit, and the demand is more than the supply. From one hectare 5-6 quintals of roots , and 50-60 Kgs of roots can be obtained.

The seeds rate per hectare for cultivation is 10-12 Kgs.Withania somnifera grows well in stony,red, clay soils and yields good results even in infertile soils.Germination starts within 10 days, and the farmer can make an assessment of the yield he is going to get..

Cultivation method:
1.Please arrange for proper water drainage in the field. Stagnant and clogged water passage is harmful to the crop.
2.Plough the field deeply.
3.Thoroughly weed the field of any unwanted vegetation.
4.Sow after heavy rainfall so that the water has permeated deep into the soil.
5.Please sow by spray or broadcast method.
6.After seeding cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, so that the seeds are depressed further into the soil.
7.If the field is water clogged, do not sow.
8.After germination regularly deweed the field so that expected results are obtained.
The crop is harvested after 160-190 days. The crop is ready when flowering of red flowers takes place, and the leaves start drying.

Cassia angustifolia( Sonamukhi) Cultivation:


This is the perfect crop for restoring barren and infertile land. This medicinal plant requires neither regular irrigation nor does it need any fertilizers. After being cultivated once it gives a regular crop for the next five years. The irrigation is taken care of by the monsoons, and the crop is neither foraged by cattle, or any type of pests infest it.

The product is widely demanded by pharmaceutical companies. The crop is suited to sandy, clay, or barren soils. The propagation method is through seeds.The field should be ploughed well, in straight rows, and seeds should be sown by broadcast method. Before sowing the field should be ploughed deep. The seeds rate per hectare for cultivation is 10-12 Kgs, and germiantion starts within 10 days of sowing..The crop does not require any fertilizers, and the plant is a shrub of 60-120 cm height..

After a crop of 100-120 days, the Cassia angustifolia leaves are ready for harvest. After the first cut, the leaves come up again, and can again be harvested after 60 days. This way 4 harvest can be had in a single year.

To retain the green colour of the leaves, the leaves should be piled in small heaps, and dried in shade. Plantago ovata (Isabgol cultivation):


This is an important medicine for all kinds of digestive ailments, and has a wide demand the world over. It is widely recommended for constipation, dysentry , stomach ulcers.

The Plantago ovata plant is 65-90 cms tall. From one plant about 50-60 bunches are harvested. Well drained soil is preferred for its cultivation.It can be cultivated on all types of soils where there is no water clogging..        

Seeds can be sown both by broadcast and deep seeding method.The seeds / rate per hectare for cultivation is 8-10 Kgs.The seeds should be watered lightly after sowing, and within a week the first sprouts can be seen. The next crop irrigation should be after 3 weeks. The third irrigation should be at time of crop ears formation. To get good crop results, cow dung manure and other recommended fertilizers should be used. Since the seeds are very minute the seeds should be mixed with sand-clay mixture at time of sowing.

The crop can be damaged by cattle, as such appropriate protection should be arranged. The crop is ready for harvest after 100-120 days. When the crop ears become red, and the seeds start popping out when the ears are crushed with both hands, the crop can be said to be ready.

The yield per hectare is 18-20 quintals .The seed husk which is the 20-25 % of the total crop yield is used to make the medicine. From one hectare about 5-6 quintals husk is obtained.

Lepidium sativum( Asaliya ):


This is another self-sustaining crop, and does not really require special management.

The plant is 30-60 cms in height. The crop age is 3-4 months. The seeds are light red in colour, and have application in digestive, acidity, eyerelated, ailments and also as a general cure for ailments. For milch cattles it is recommended for increasing the milk yield of the cattle.

It is a hardy crop able to stand any type of crop conditions. It is not foraged by cattle, and pest infestation is unknown. Very little fertilizer or manure is required..
The seeds rate per hectare for cultivation is 10-12 Kgs per hectare.
The crop is ready in 90-120 days. When the leaves start yellowing and the leaves the fruit turn red, the crop is ready for harvest. The crop should be hand plucked and dried for 2-3 days, and then the seeds extracted from the fruit.
